BIOGRAPHY

Francesca received the degree in Industrial Chemistry in 2004 at the University of Milan. She then awarded a post-graduate grant at CNR-Institute for Energetics and Interphases (IENI) in Milan, on a national project on the topic: “Optical and morphological characterization of carbonaceous matter in hydrocarbon flames”. In 2009 she received her PhD in Industrial Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the Politecnico in Milan. From 2009 to 2011 she was Research Associate at the Institute for Chemical Process and Environmental Technology (ICPET) of the National Research Council of Canada in Ottawa, where she led research on “Optical Diagnostic for Measurement of Emission”. During this period she also spent three months as Visiting Scientist at the Deutsches Zentrum fur Luft-und Raumhart (DLR) in Stutturgart. Since 2011 she is researcher at the ICMATE unit in Milan, specializing in the development and application of advanced optical/laser diagnostics in reactive systems, with particular interest in measuring and characterizing combustion-generated nanoparticles in flames and in the environment.
Since 2019 she is member of ICMATE Institute Board.
She has authored or co-authored several refereed publications and conference contributions, and is member of the Italian section of the Combustion Institute.

RESEARCH AREAS

RESEARCH ACTIVITY

Her research activity focuses on:

development and application of the laser-induced incandescence (LII) technique for real-time Black Carbon monitoring in the environment and at the exhaust of combustion systems;
application of spectroscopic/laser techniques (e.g. extinction and scattering, LII, laser-induced fluorescence, chemiluminescence, LIBS) for the analsysis of combustion process of conventional and emerging fuels (e.g. Sustainable Aviation Fuels)
synthesis of metal oxides nanoparticles via Flame Spray Pyrolysis;
study of optical, structural and morphological properties of carbon and metal oxides nanoparticles;
development of the laser breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique for the analysis of heavy metals in aerosols phase.

FORMAZIONE

Laureata in Chimica Industriale nel 2004 all’Università degli Studi di Milano, ha conseguito il Dottorato di ricerca in Chimica Industriale e Ingegneria Chimica nel 2009 presso il Politecnico di Milano.

ATTIVITA’ LAVORATIVA E CAMPI DI RICERCA

Ricercatore presso la sede ICMATE di Milano dal 2011, è stata Research Associate presso il National Research Council Canada ad Ottawa (2009-2011) e Visiting Scientist in Germania presso il Deutsches Zentrum fur Luft-und Raumhart (DLR) di Stoccarda (2010).

Si occupa dello sviluppo e applicazione di avanzate tecniche ottiche/laser per la misura e caratterizzazione di nanoparticelle, carboniose e non, generate da sistemi di combustione. In particolare l’attività riguarda: sviluppo e applicazione della tecnica di Incandescenza indotta da laser (LII) per la determinazione del particolato carbonioso fine nell’ambiente; campagne di misura ambientali per la misura del Black carbon; studio delle proprietà ottiche, morfologiche e strutturali dell’aerosol da combustione; studio delle proprietà fisico-chimiche di nanoparticelle di ossidi di metalli prodotte via Flame Spray; sviluppo della tecnica di Breakdown indotto da laser (LIBS) per l’analisi di aerosoli.
