UV VIS SPECTROSCOPY AND TOC ANALYSIS

Spectroscopic analysis is based on the matter-electromagnetic radiation interaction. UV-Vis spectroscopy operates with ultra-violet and visible radiation, thus allowing electronic transitions in the investigated samples. The matter-radiation interaction result is collected as a spectrum in which the physical quantity (absorbance, transmittance or reflectance) is displayed as a wavelength function. UV-Vis Spectroscopy allows both qualitative and quantitative measurements (detection limit is in the micro-molar range, as a function of the investigated compound). The Shimadzu UV-2600 spectrophotometer can operate both on solution and on solid samples. It can perform classical absorbance measurements for compounds quantification or for reaction kinetic studies. The use of the specular reflectance available module is specially dedicated to semiconductors and optical materials or for thin film thickness determination. The diffuse reflectance module, on the other hand, is dedicated to opaque samples such as paints or powders.
The available Shimadzu TOC-L analyzer is dedicated to the carbon content measurement in solutions. It adopts the catalytic combustion method with a 680°C furnace for completely converting organic matter into carbon dioxide, operating both on low molecular weight compounds as well as on macromolecules, also including hard-to-decompose compounds (such as perfluorinated species). The high sensitivity allows carbon quantification from 4 µg/L to 30000 mg/L, thanks to the automatic dilution system. Thanks to multi purposes option, several information can be obtained for a specific sample: total carbon, organic carbon, inorganic carbon, purgeable and non-purgeable organic carbon.
