BIOGRAPHY

He graduated in Biomedical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano in 2001 and received his Ph.D. from University College London (UK) in 2004 with a thesis on fluid-structure modelling of cardiovascular surgery. Later the same year, he started working for the National Research Council at Lecco as a Research Fellow. He holds a Researcher position since 2009.

From 2010, he is the scientific leader of a research group specialised in biomedical and sports applications of metallic and hybrid materials, and in the development of multimaterial structures and soft systems, particularly for wearable and medical devices.

He has directed or taken part with responsible roles in approximately 20 interdisciplinary financed research projects aimed at the design and testing of material-inspired devices and biorobotic systems for neurorehabilitation, dynamic prosthetics, and (para)sports. The focus is typically on the development of high-readiness-level technologies integrating advanced functional materials, electronics and ICT. Those solutions are validated in nationwide multicentre clinical trials and neuroscience studies.

He has contracts with private companies for the optimisation of medical devices with advanced materials, and for training courses, and has evaluated industrial projects as a National expert.

He has taught academic courses in Metal Science for over 10 years, supervised 4 Ph.D. projects, and several M.Sc. theses in Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Biomedical Engineering, and Industrial Design. He has also served as international assessor of a number of M.Sc. theses in Metallurgy and Materials Engineering.

RESEARCH ACTIVITY

His activity includes the study of:

Study of functional and structural metallic materials, particularly Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) and light alloys, including property optimisation, functional characterisation by physical and mechanical methods, and mathematical modelling of their engineering behaviour.
Development and optimisation of functional multimaterial systems, composites and hybrid materials in advanced solutions for biomedical and sports applications.
Integration of smart materials, electronic, automation and information technologies for the deployment of high-readiness-level devices for (soft) actuation and sensing.
Design of components with geometrically-complex shapes in multiple materials by virtual prototyping, metastructuring, topologic optimisation, computational simulations, and additive manufacturing.
Engineering and clinical testing of material-inspired personalised near-body devices.
Main application fields: materials and devices for neurorehabilitation, orthotics, prosthetics, biorobotics, sports biomechanics and wearables.

Dopo aver conseguito un diploma universitario in Lingua e Cultura Cinese nel 1996, si è laureato presso il Politecnico di Milano in Ingegneria Biomedica nel 2001 e ha conseguito il titolo di Ph.D. in Child Health presso lo University College London (Regno Unito) nel 2004. Dal 2004 lavora presso il Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Istituto di Chimica della Materia Condensata e Tecnologie per l’Energia (CNR-ICMATE – ex CNR-IENI). I suoi principali interessi si concentrano sull’applicazione di materiali funzionali, in particolare le leghe a memoria di forma e sistemi di materiali ibridi. È il coordinatore scientifico di un gruppo di ricerca che lavora sulle applicazioni biomediche dei materiali e sulla progettazione di dispositivi e sistemi sensorizzati per la riabilitazione, le neuroscienze e il benessere delle persone. È principal investigator di 3 progetti nazionali sulla riabilitazione neuromuscolare, l’attività fisica e la protesica; responsabile di unità operativa in ulteriori 5 progetti nazionali; e work-package o task leader in altri 2 progetti nazionali. È autore di oltre 80 pubblicazioni scientifiche su argomenti che comprendono la fluidodinamica computazionale, la biomeccanica, la scienza dei materiali e le sue applicazioni in neurologia e neuroscienze, tra cui 38 articoli peer-reviewed e 2 brevetti internazionali. È il responsabile del Laboratorio di Dispositivi Prototipali presso la sede di Lecco del CNR-ICMATE. È professore a contratto di “Metals Science and Sustainability” presso l’Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, ed il relatore di 3 progetti di Dottorato e varie tesi di Laurea Magistrale in Ingegneria, Design, e Scienza dei Materiali. È uno dei soci fondatori del Gruppo Nazionale di Bioingegneria (GNB), ed è membro del Centro Metalli e Tecnologie Applicative dell’Associazione Nazionale di Metallurgia.
